Representation theory and homological stability

چکیده

We introduce the idea of representation stability (and several variations) for a sequence of representations Vn of groups Gn. A central application of the new viewpoint we introduce here is the importation of representation theory into the study of homological stability. This makes it possible to extend classical theorems of homological stability to a much broader variety of examples. Representation stability also provides a framework in which to find and to predict patterns, from classical representation theory (Littlewood–Richardson and Murnaghan rules, stability of Schur functors), to cohomology of groups (pure braid, Torelli and congruence groups), to Lie algebras and their homology, to the (equivariant) cohomology of flag and Schubert varieties, to combinatorics (the (n + 1)n−1 conjecture). The majority of this paper is devoted to exposing this phenomenon through examples. In doing this we obtain applications, theorems and conjectures. Beyond the discovery of new phenomena, the viewpoint of representation stability can be useful in solving problems outside the theory. In addition to the applications given in this paper, it is applied in [CEF] to counting problems in number theory and finite group theory. Representation stability is also used in [C] to give broad generalizations and new proofs of classical homological stability theorems for configuration spaces on oriented manifolds. ∗The authors gratefully acknowledge support from the National Science Foundation.

Étale homological stability and arithmetic statistics

We contribute to the arithmetic/topology dictionary by relating asymptotic point counts and arithmetic statistics over finite fields to homological stability and representation stability over C in the example of configuration spaces of n points in smooth varieties. To do this, we import the method of homological stability from the realm of topology into the theory of étale cohomology; in partic...

Representation stability and finite linear groups

We construct analogues of FI-modules where the role of the symmetric group is played by the general linear groups and the symplectic groups over finite rings and prove basic structural properties such as Noetherianity. Applications include a proof of the Lannes– Schwartz Artinian conjecture in the generic representation theory of finite fields, very general homological stability theorems with t...

Dirichlet branes, homological mirror symmetry, and stability

We discuss some mathematical conjectures which have come out of the study of Dirichlet branes in superstring theory, focusing on the case of supersymmetric branes in Calabi-Yau compactification. This has led to the formulation of a notion of stability for objects in a derived category, contact with Kontsevich’s homological mirror symmetry conjecture, and ”physics proofs” for many of the subsequ...

Rings of Singularities

This paper is a slightly revised version of an introduction into singularity theory corresponding to a series of lectures given at the ``Advanced School and Conference on homological and geometrical methods in representation theory'' at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Miramare - Trieste, Italy, 11-29 January 2010. We show how to associate to a triple of posit...

A configuration of homological stability results

This thesis has two purposes. The first is to serve as an introductory survey to the study of homological stability in algebraic topology. Particular focus is given to the study of configuration spaces and all the topics that we discuss will be related to them in some way. We prove homological stability theorems and use homological stability to answer questions from other fields of mathematics....
